Management Planning & Surveying Workshop

5 September 09

In the words of Dr Chris Smith, highly-qualified ecologist who has surveyed many acres for owners of private nature reserves (as well as for other major land owners): "A management plan is crucial to maintaining or developing a plot of land for the benefit of ecology and wildlife. It enables you to set targets, monitor progress and guage success. Past guidance from official circles often seemed to demand a lengthy and complicated document and it could sometimes even be seen as an end in itself. But simplicity is the key, with fundamental practical issues and recommendations at its core."

Chris Smith is a speaker at our workshop on the 5 September, other speakers include Liz Biron Survey Manager at the Somerset Enviromental Record Center (SERC), Phil Stone Countryside Manager at Somerset County Council, he will tell us about grants available to help with management, and Matthew Marshall the new SWT Advisory Countryside Officer who will talk about grassland management and restoration.

After lunch we will look at the management plan of the SWT Jan Hobbs Nature Reserve and then visit the reserve near by to see the plan in action.
